Cameron County now ships pretrial detainees out of county because so many beds are taken up with contract prisoners, while Gregg County at one point had to stop arresting people for all but serious felonies for the same reason. [read post]

According to the most recent data (pdf) from the Commission on Jail Standards, around 15% of county jail prisoners statewide are being held on contract from other jurisdictions.That said, since IMO most county jails are incarcerating folks that really needn't be there as long as they're housed, I don't expect these releases to impact public safety, just like Gregg County saw no crime spike a few years back when it stopped arresting low-level… [read post]

In Cameron County a similar arrangement has forced officials to ship local, pretrial detainees to other counties, while in Gregg County for a while they actually stopped making misdemeanor arrests after Hurricane Rita because their jail was full of contract detainees. [read post]

They're temporarily refusing to accept low-level arrestees in the Victoria jail until everyone gets re-settled, something which happened for a more extended period with apparently no ill effects in Chambers and Gregg Counties after Hurricane Rita.Waiting to make bond. [read post]
